Another Saturday evening escape on the cards, and this time we wanted to head back to somewhere we’d half explored a few weeks back (or months? I lose track!), around the Peña Amaya area in the north of Palencia.
We decided to overnight at a spot on the side of the road we’d spotted previously, near the village of Albacastro, and it turned out to be a lovely breakfast spot – and a quiet overnight.
After breakfast, we went back to visit the lovely Romanesque church at Robelledo de la Torre – closed last time we visited, but today we were in luck, we just managed to slip into the end of a tour – and wow, what a beautifully painted inside – big fans of painted churches here!
After the visit, we decided to check out a circular walk we’d seen here on our last visit, billed as a geological walk, it took us up along some lovely rock ledges for great views over the surrounding countryside and mountains.
We then settled on a nice lunch spot – and another place to revisit in the future when it’s open – the picnic area in front of the rock church at Olleros de Pisuerga – lovely shady spot under the trees with picnic benches for lunch.
