We’d heard there was a nice new AC Area in Cantabria – so we had to go check it out!  We had 24 hours – another after-work-on-Saturday-afternoon jobby, and it looked like Sunday was going to be a stunner…and THEN we found out there was a cheese festival on in the village that weekend, so we were there!

The Area de Autocaravanas Las Hazas in the town of Cobreces on the western coast of Cantabria has been set up very well, a bit of an example to follow in our book.  Great, perfectly flat parking, CCTV, picnic area, shower & toilet, washing machine, full easy to use water services, local info boards, and lovely views to the town’s convent church.  We arrived late and slept well – and looked forward to using it as our base the next day.

Waking up to lovely views of the church, we had a nice warm shower in the shower block, before breakfast outside, and then were joined by some friends to head to the cheese fair.  This isn’t a regular thing, it was just this weekend in July, but it’s a yearly event, well set up indoors, and we bought a lot of cheese!  We then proceeded to go back to the van and eat the cheese for lunch in the sunshine of course.

After lunch we all wandered down to the beach, a short walk, but it’s a great beach (difficult to park, so a bonus not having to!), had a little sunbathe and a nice beer in the beachside bar.

After our friends left us, we then decided to check out the cliff walk to the Molino de Bolao, a ruined mill with the stream creating a waterfall into the sea, which is explained on the information board in the AC Area.  A perfect evening, a perfect sunset, it’s a lovely 1 hour stroll along the cliff tops, and made a very nice end to our 24 hours in Cobreces.  We’ll definitely be coming back here to enjoy more beach days.
